Grafton, Utah
Ghost Town

Grafton Utah Ghost Town

Grafton Utah was first settled in 1861.  Grafton, Utah is two miles West of Rockville, Utah and 1/4 mile south of the Virgin River.

Grafton had problems with recurring serious flooding. The Great Flood of 1862 washed the town site away. The town was then resettled on higher ground in 1862. Grafton became a ghost town in 1921.

There is a cemetery on the outskirts of the old town where you can read a little history and view the names of the people who tried to make a new home in the path of the virgin river.

Vandalism had destroyed most of the abandoned structures.  Preservation of the old buildings is now under way.

On your way to Zion National Park it is fun to stop and visit this quaint little ghost town. Grafton is located just west of the town of Rockville on State Route 9. Take Bridge Road over the river and then follow it westward as it parallels the river to the town site.

Here is a link to the PDF copy of the Historic Grafton Pamphlet from the Utah Division of State History and the National Parks Association.
